Northern Colorado is full of beautiful locations for family photos, from mountain views and lakes to open fields and charming downtown areas.

One of the questions I get asked most often is, "Where should we take our family photos?"

The truth is, the best location depends on your family's style. Do you love mountain scenery? Water views? Open fields? A more urban feel? Here are some of my favorite family photography locations throughout Northern Colorado.

1. Carter Lake

If you love Colorado's natural beauty, Carter Lake is hard to beat. Located just west of Loveland, it offers a little bit of everything:

  • Mountain backdrops
  • Water views
  • Rolling hills
  • Beautiful sunsets
  • Plenty of space for children to explore

Carter Lake can offer a quieter atmosphere. I love the beautiful combination of mountains and water.

Best for: Adventurous families, young children, and families wanting classic Colorado scenery.

2. Viestenz-Smith Park

Nestled along the Big Thompson River just west of Loveland, this location offers an incredible variety of scenery in a single session. From rustic bridges and winding trails to towering trees, river views, and beautiful mountain backdrops, every turn provides a new setting for natural, timeless photographs.

One of the reasons I love photographing families here is that it gives children room to explore. Instead of standing still and saying "cheese," kids can walk the trails, peek over bridges, toss rocks into the river, and simply be themselves. Those genuine moments often become the images families treasure most.

As a Loveland local, this is often my go-to recommendation for families who want mountain views, water, and a variety of backgrounds all in one location.

3. River's Edge Natural Area

River's Edge Natural Area is one of my favorite Loveland photo locations for family and senior portraits. Conveniently located near downtown Loveland, it features scenic trails, ponds, mature trees, and beautiful tall grasses that shine during the summer and fall seasons. The nearby river adds even more variety with natural, shaded settings perfect for portraits. Dogs are welcome, making this a great location for families who want to include their furry friends in their photos.

River's Edge offers the best of both worlds—a natural, outdoor setting that feels miles away from the city, while actually being conveniently located in central Loveland. It's an excellent option for families looking for a beautiful location close to home.

4. Wild Natural Area

One of Loveland's newest natural areas, Wild Natural Area offers a peaceful Colorado setting with river access, open meadows, and beautiful views of the foothills. Located just west of town along the Big Thompson River, this hidden gem feels quiet and untouched while remaining easy to access for families. The area features soft-surface trails, native vegetation, and a restored river corridor that creates a natural backdrop for family and senior portraits. A unique bonus of choosing this location is its proximity to Sweet Heart Winery. It's the perfect way to turn family photo day into a fun outing—capture beautiful memories, then stay and enjoy a glass of wine with stunning views of the foothills.

A personal favorite of mine!
